How to Configure your SMTP Server

Print | Bookmark
To send out e-mail you need to configure your outgoing (SMTP) server.  But before you do that, you must choose the server you plan on using.

1) Recommended Server - Your ISP's SMTP server

The standard method to setup your outgoing mail server is to use your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

You can get the connection information from your ISP, such as Verizon, AT&T or Bell.

This is the preferred method of setting up your e-mail and you should contact them for the appropriate information.

2) Alternate Server - Maknet's SMTP server
There may be some reasons why you want to use Maknet's servers.  As mentioned above, the "proper" way is to set it up using your ISP's connection information.

However, maybe you feel their service is slow and you really want to use our mail server.

Example Configuration Settings
Server: mail.yourdomain.com
username: john.smith@yourdomain.com
password: ******

You must also set "Authentication" to "on".
If you forget to turn it on, you will likely get the error:
""Reason: 553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)"

Lastly, you must set your port to #26.

Technical Notes
Port #25 is the default port to be used for SMTP.  In other words, when you need to send out e-mail, port #25 is used between your computer and the server.

To cut down on spam, most ISPs actually block port #25 outside their network.  Using this method, they can control the traffic of their users. You can still send out because the ISP will authenticate your username and allow you to e-mail to the Internet.

By using port #26, we are effectively bypassing their firewall blocking systems and allowing you to send through our server.

It's sort of like a little hack to bypass their security.  It may not work forever, but for now, this method works.

Still, we highly recommend configuring your e-mail using Method #1 above - your ISP's SMTP servers.
